Now maybe I have been in the dark and never heard of this site. It is ingenious, this is what a nonprofit embracing a new form of marketing media is all about. This site not only is entertaining, thought provoking but it also donates a lot of rice. At last I knew it was around 400 mega tons. I was playing just before posting this and had already donated 400 grains. Tom Shoes headed by Blake Mycoskie, who deems himself Chief Shoe Giver. The concept of Tom Shoes simple and straight forward. For every pair of shoes purchased, which are based on a classic Argentine style shoe, Toms Shoes gives a pair to a child in need. They have plain white shoes you can order and put on community events where you create your own designs. Why is this great? It involves the community and brings people together for a great cause. Not only are people brought together but they are giving a pair to a child in need for every person involved. In today's world where so many things have become non-personal, this is a great thing. With everything being computerized and there being so little need for people to communicate with each other, this brings people together to communicate and talk. More companies and projects need to do this bring people face to face again. This company is based on a simple premise and they live breathe and eat that story. Its simple straight forward and rewarding. Tom's shoes for tomorrow.

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Tom's Shoes

Customer Service

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_-kTza3wIBaA/R8rkPHgGzpI/AAAAAAAAAC8/P6Tfem5jxKI/s200/phone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173198070351318674" />
Here is a story about great customer service. Who this time of year likes buying oil for your furnace? I know I don't with the price of oil rising higher and higher. I had reluctantly called Irving, whom supplies my oil. I told them I needed a delivery and they scheduled it in for this past Thursday the 28Th. I happened to go inti my garage the other day and looked at my oil level. Guess what I found, they had not delivered my oil and now I was getting critically low. It had been two days since my scheduled delivery and I was going to call and let them know. I was not happy when I made the call, as most would not be. I explained to the woman on the other end, she immediately apologized and asked me to hold while she called dispatch. She quickly came back and said they would be here within 24 hours with an emergency delivery. My first question, is that going to cost me? As most places will charge you for an emergency delivery. She said, "Not at all we broke our promise to you.". I said thank you and she said, "No,thank you.". After I hung up the phone I was speechless for a moment. "We broke our promise", "No, Thank you.", these responses caught me off guard. Do I still enjoy spending my money on oil?,NO. Though she handled this situation with true care and made me forget about the overall problem in the first place. Here is an excerpt from their ad "At the other end of the phone, you'll find a friendly, knowledgeable Irving customer care Representative- not an answering service-24 hours a day, 7 days a week.". The key in this a "customer care Representative". I left the conversation felling like she cared, they have a story and they follow it from top to bottom. She has outgrown her toddler bed and it was time to move up. We decided to go to Bob's "no hassle" so they say. You enter and I have to say there are sales people hanging out all over the place. One will come up and introduce their selves and show you where things are then be gone. No hassle, no pressure. This is where it gets agitating, after making our selection we hunted down a sales associate and showed them what we wanted. Now we have made our selection, we are ready to purchase, no hassle, no pressure as of yet. Then comes ALL the options, delivery options, extra GOOF proof warranties [I told him we where goof proof], extra protectors. The list goes on, some of the things not being so no hassle or pressure at all. To points where we say "No" and they continue to try and sell it. The purchase was finally made and done, I did not leave feeling no pressure.... It reminds me of dealing with Capitol One, the are "no hassle" as well. That is until you call for something, then they have everything under the rainbow that they want to offer you. Which leads me to my point, your story and sticking with it. If you believe in your product or service you should offer all that. Might it cost a little more maybe, but you would truly set yourself apart. You wold be going to the edges where few tread, due to the fact that so many are afraid of the fringes. It is dangerous water to tread but you will set yourself apart. Maybe offer a pamphlet with all the extras at the beginning, with the prices and tell them if they want any of the extras, to let them know when you purchase. Never asking again, now that is no hassle or pressure. Either way if you say you are one thing and do another your story doesn't jive. How is the customer or client supposed to retell that story? We ended up at Famous Dave's, I had heard some talk about it [word of mouth and the story are powerful]. If you haven't noticed I am all about the story that lies beneath the surface waiting to be discovered. This was no different, when I walked in it seemed like a BBQ place. The first thing I noticed was the smell of delicious BBQ. Next was all the odd things all over the walls. Not so much odd but a lot to look at never bored. Then I noticed the old fashioned wooden benches, concrete floors [easy cleanup]. It didn't stop there everyone was laid back and all their names started with Famous. The menu was loaded with BBQ everything, they did not stray from that. I noticed on the table a roll of paper towels. Not one with your utensils or a couple when they brought the meal but a whole roll. This told me "This is going to be messy" real BBQ. Next was the fact that I did not have to ask for BBQ sauce, no, there was a wooden box on our table with seven different BBQ sauces. From "Sweet and zesty", "Sweet and Sassy" to my favorite "Devils spit", it lived up to its name if you are curious. They have a great story here and they live it. This makes it easy for me to retell the story to anyone I please which will be many. Here is an excerpt from their website " Dave’s road to fame began with a strong hankerin’ for fine barbecue and a stronger desire to make the finest slow-smoked barbecue folks had ever tasted. He visited rib shacks, roadside joints, every hole-in-the-wall or fancy pants supper club he could, all in search of the most succulent meats, savory seasonings and lipsmackin’ sauces around." I had noticed how the sidewalks were not plowed two days after it snowed. I commented on how it must stink drudging through the snow. It made me think about how the city itself even has a story. We began watching how everyone was in their own world. Unobservant of anything but them. It is like the city not taking time for them. To plow the sidewalks, they don't take time to show them they care. Sometimes the littlest things can make a difference. We live about twelve miles outside the city and I go to work at or before 6:30 am and the crews are out plowing the sidewalks and getting rid of snowbanks. I pay higher taxes for it but I feel the town cares about its residents. Everyone knows everyone and everyone cares about one another. Land where we live is highly sought after, not so in the city. "If you don't want to be here we will fill your void. Then to only concrete our thoughts. We went through the Drive through at Dunkin Donuts for coffee. When we made it to the window the girl waiting on us handed us our order with her back to us while talking to a co-worker about her mother. I took our stuff and drove off with out any sort of thanks or personal service. Stories are everywhere and they say a lot. Wahts your story and what does it say? Now I know why I chose not to live in the city.

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Gatherings

I believe in the power of groups. A group of people that believe in something hold a lot of influence. Whether what they believe in is a cause a product or service. I have been thinking about this concept a lot lately. Word of mouth is a powerful tool that is not always properly harnessed. Sometimes this leads to people being misled or feeling deceived. Imagine if you had a large gathering of people with a common interest maybe not all the same view. Some people that are curios about this cause, product or service. These people are given the tools and stories that go along with this common message and all the things they can imagine to try for free. All while benefiting a great cause. No one is forced a message, everyone is there by choice willing to listen, wanting to listen. They then want to tell others and get them involved... back to word of mouth and genuine stories. This is something I am going to work on making a reality. A consumer conscious for benefit gathering. I will keep you up to date on this idea and when it hatches I will post it here. Now I have some people to get in contact with.

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Super Bowl commercials

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_-kTza3wIBaA/R6nTHIBgrpI/AAAAAAAAACc/9_ikOZr3Y3c/s200/31adco_600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163890567123349138" />
What have we learned after the Super Bowl about advertising? The obvious is that companies will pay big bucks almost 3 million dollars for a 30 second ad. What do the companies get out of it? A lot of people talking about their ads if they are funny or just disturbing enough [you know which I am talking about]. Does this actually sell your product or service? I am in no hurry to go out and buy Doritos b/c of a life sized mouse beating up someone, funny yes. Nor, am I any more likely to by Sobe b/c of lizards dancing to Thriller. I will admit they get a lot of talk time and free publicity but in my opinion most of the time this will not lead to extra sales. Why not spend that money on fundamental grass roots marketing. Tell your story and why you are better and why your product should be bought. It is the story of your services and products that people buy and fall in love with. You can buy alot more marketing and sales with three million than one ad that will get alot publicity. I truly dont believe that publicity will always = sales. A genuine product and story will=word of mouth, which=sales and loyalty.

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Customers and their satisfaction.

Being in marketing, I am always watching and listeneing for the underlying stories of everything. I go out to eat on a frequent basis, I am not talking McDonalds but places where you are actually served. Have you ever noticed that all dinner long you are being interupted by the waitress. "How is your meal?" "Can I get you a refill?" "Would you like more bread?" "Would you like this packaged up?" The last being really important, that means you are all done your meal and would like to get your check and leave. You have had your [hopefully] great meal and you and your family would like to go now. Now what happens is crucial. The amount of time it takes to get that check. I would think this being crucial in getting the next customer sitting and keep people from waiting. Although it never fails that the server seems to disappear at this point taking at least on average five minutes. Doesn't seem long but when you are done and ready to go it is an eternity. If any servers or restaraunt managers are reading, I belive that this is an important part of customer service. Almost all restaraunts pride themselves on speedy great and friendly service. This is part of your story, what I tell other customers. A couple times a week I try and find something new and exciting. As a general rule I find the usual, same and more of the same. To my surprise and pleasure I found a new site, JobFox. JobFox is new and I believe very new site, from former founder and CEO of Careerbuilder.com, Rob McGovern . This site is similar to the current job hunting sites but different in many great and valuable ways. They have a new job fit engine that matches you with employers on The ten dimension of a Good Fit Job (sm). Along with you being able to create a very comprehensive profile and being able to see who is looking into your profile. Another great thing is the experience map that is put together that shows your experience on a map for employers to view. You also get for free [don't know how long] to take a questionnaire that takes about fifteen minutes. It then takes all your answers and creates a report called the "Savilleconsulting Wave". This report gives a breakdown of your personality and how you work. Mine fit me perfect, almost scary perfect. So if you are on the hunt you should consider JobFox.

Happy Hatching,

Jason Desjardins

Incubation Studios

Jason@whereideascometohatch.com

The Verb is in!

Back when I started this company I went with the address you see above. A site with a verb in the URL. I had read an article from Seth Godin speaking about websites having verbs in them was going to be the way to go. I listen to the things Godin says, he is a genius. I went with it and now a year later it is amazing how many websites are popping up all over the place with verbs in the URL. I could copulate a list here but it would be long. My suggestion is that if you are in the process of creating a website before you buy your domain consider putting some action in it. Home Grown Marketing is a more simple and targeted form of marketing we are going to start offering. Rather than having a campaign with a massive radius and an attempt at reaching mass demographics of potential consumers. Home grown is more pin pointed to a specific demographic and area. With this you can try and reach specific people with your story. Still giving them all the tools to tell you story just with a more concentrated dose. Like watering your garden. So if you have a home grown story you want to tell get in touch with us.

Happy Hatching,

Jason Desjardins

jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Feel Good System

The other day for the first time I sat down and tried out the X Box 360. One of my friends had brought his over. I have been a loyal follower of Sony products may I add. Once the system was booted up I was already drawn in. The system from the loading on gave me the jitters of anticipation. I especially for some reason liked the countdown to play time while waiting. I have to say once play started I was further impressed by the overall run and depth of the games. I must say that this is a system with built in marketing. Once you start playing you don't want to stop. All products should have this feature [built in marketing]. This system sells itself if you play it. On other fronts we have several consulting jobs in line. One with a photographer looking for new avenues, one with an incredible designer looking to get his story all going in the same direction. Before the fireworks had started you see this glowing man. This guy is covered from head to toe with everything glowing to buy. He just walked through the two fields without saying one word and had people coming up to him left and right buying things. Once the fireworks had begun, another man came through the field we where in and was waving around glow stick yelling "Get your glow sticks." Not one person went up to him for a purchase? The second guy had waited until the show had started. The kids and adults where looking for entertainment before the show not during it. The glowing mans timing was perfect and he didn't have to say one thing to sell a glow stick. His marketing was built right in. Might I remind you I live just outside the city in a small quite town. There on the corner of the yard was a table, with a box and a bunch of oddly shaped and colored rocks. With a sign that read "Cool Rocks 50 cents". This is young entrepreneurship at its finest, it reminds me of my days of kool-aid stands only seemingly much more thought provoking. Made me wonder what makes these rocks so cool... What is it in your product or service or company that is a cool rock? This made me think about it, it certainly grabbed my attention, and I told a lot of people about it. Built in story, this is what people overlook in marketing the story.

Happy Hatching

Jason Desjardins

jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Contact Information

Please feel free to drop me a line which ever way you choose via, e-mail, mail or phone. Incubation Studios was created to be a marketing company with a for-benefit mission. We do most all of our work with non-profits, helping you get your story out to the people. In this day and age there are so many new forms of media, that it may seem easy enough to just throw on all the new crazes and expect it to work. Unfortunantly that is not how it works. You need to find which of these new forms of marketing fit your non-profit and build around it from the ground up. In a day when so many non-profits are struggling and some disappearing, we give new avenues in which to pursue. It used to be that marketings purpose was to interupt you and get your attention. Now in a new day of marketing people can skip your interuption and your message is not always heard, you need peoples permission to speak with them. That is why we give your non-profit a story that you live and breathe and incorporate the new media to help you tell that story. With the log jam of messages in today’s world [estimated to be over 4,700 marketing and advertising messages in one day] and so much marketing being able to be shut out or off. We invite you and your consumer into the story and give them the tools to tell a great story about you. A campaign for an art contest to help raise awareness and help a local coffee shop market their story is being presented to the board of the NHAAE this week. Well aside form this being exactly what Incubation Studios is. It is a big movement be it one that is just getting started, to spawn new companies that are either run by non-profits for profit or companies that are getting involved with the helping of non-profits. In the example of Incubation Studios we every campaign is centered around a non-profit and in the end gives back to these non-profits. Which is why we consider ourselves "for-benefit". I was excited to see an article run in this past Sundays NYT that discussed these new corporate hybrids. As we are doing with our current campaign with the New Hampshire alliance for Arts Education [NHAAE]. We are trying to help bring the message of the importance of art and arts education in children. With non-profits struggling all over the country new approaches need to be taking and this seems to be a very promising course. I will not forget my board meeting with the Alliance, "Well we have never worked with a marketing company before."

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
jason@whereideascometohatch.com
Incubation Studios

The Mimo's are coming.

I was reading an article in the The Boston Globe the other day about Mimoco. Incradible artist who has an opinion and is not afraid t o let people know. If there is anything I have learned in all my years in marketing, is if you want to get noticed go the edge. Take what ever it is you are involved in and go where everyone else is afraid to tread. You are sure to get noticed and peole are sure to tell your story. to many companies and people are afraid to do this because no one else is doinhg it, its not the status quo. Which brings me back to the title of this blog. Is this Bansky just another graffiti artist or a marketing genius? I can tell you one thing is people are noticing him and they are talking about him. Seems to me like his work has the marketing and story built right in. The likes of Aguilera, Brad Pitt, Jolie, Reeves all are drewling over this guys work. He just also sold a piece of work for $200,000, I would say it is working out for him. Graffiti artist or genius, you decide? Below I have put the link ti his site, I warn to venture at your own risk. The work maybe offensive to some due to the opinions he expresses.

Bansky

Happy Hatching,

Jason Desjardins

Incubation Studios

Jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Rockzilla and stone age guerilla marketing

This morning as I awoke, while watching cartoons with my daughter on boomerang. Side note great station for us who remember these old cartoons. Point, she is watching The Flinstones. As we watch the episode which is titled "The Son of Rockzilla". In the episode Fred is hired t o dress up as a dinosaur from a new horror film that is being filmed. He is to go into Bedrock and create a frenzy and publicize the new film? Of course as all cartoons go, all chaos erupts and nothing goes as planned, and no one is happy about it. Sounds a lot like the guerrilla marketing of today. Someone tries to pull off a stunt to publicize something, nothing goes as planned and chaos ensues. I can think of one fairly recently... What amazed me was this episode aired in February of 1964. I tried to find out when the first noted publicity stunt occurred to no avail. Maybe someone out there knows and could drop a line. Maybe it started in the stone ages?

Happy Hatching,

Jason Desjardins

Incubation Studios

jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Tipp-Kick? It is a miniature golfing game designed after a classic German game called Tipp-Kick. This is roughly two years old and I have never heard of it before, although it caught my curiosity. Next thing I know I am at the site looking it over. This is a very artistically designed figurine with a lot of precision. On the site you can watch a video about it although in German, you get the idea. This is a great little product that goes for about 94 U.S dollars. The reason I mention this product here is it has so many stories just gushing from it. I am by no means a golfer, yet I feel drawn to it something says "Try me". This is a classic example of a product with the story built right into the product. Once you see it you have an urge to want and try it. I have a feeling that once you try it you will also want to tell everyone about it. This is the type of thing products and services should try and strive for. Built in stories. The link to the page is below if you are curious. I have also included a couple of pics.

Pit Green

Happy Hatching,

Jason Desjardins

Incubation Studios

Jason@whereideascometohatch.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whereideascometohatch.blogspot.com/2007/04/tipp-kick-office-golf.html' title='Tipp-Kick? The other day in the car I was thinking about this fine line. This line that seems so thin that one can get lost in what their purpose is. The word "Madvertising" popped into my head. After a good chuckle I thought about it. Anything you could associate with this term fits well. Not only is it as simple as throwing the "M" from marketing in front of "advertising". on further thought, these types of intrusions usually make the receiver "mad". I due use that loosely not in the complete context of angry, but annoyed. The occurrence of these "madvertising" stunts and campaigns is growing greater with the want of a company to have an impression over the next. It could be enough to drive you "mad", especially if it is the year of "guerrilla marketing". That's is why we put a companies product or service through our "Incubator". It is what we call our brainstorming, we want to find the story in your product, service or company. The one everyone will love to talk about. No one wants things flung in their face, maybe some, but I have yet to meet one. I love hearing genuine stories one I choose to tell. You cant tell a person what to say about you. You can only guide them in the direction, give them the tools and let them take it from there. After all what kind of a story might "madvertising" tell?

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
Incubation Studios
Jason@whereideascometohatch.com

Marketing VS. Advertising

I have noticed some recent articles in business magazines that state "This is the year for Guerrilla Marketing." . This is disturbing to me, for the main reason that this is exactly the type of marketing that gives marketing a bad name. Often times it seems that the purpose of marketing gets lost in the pursuit of getting noticed. If you want to get noticed you should look into advertising. seeing as how advertising is about getting your product service or company noticed. when you advertise you want consumers, to notice your new product. In marketing it is about the story. What do people say about your company product or service. The most valuable thing to a company word of mouth, or at least it should be. Sometimes it seems these advertising tactics sometimes cross a thin line that sometimes separates marketing and advertising and gives marketing a bad rap. by no means is advertising worse but I believe that guerrilla marketing is more of a look at me than a listen to what we have to say and tell others. a genuine story is what lies at the center of a great marketing campaign. People do love to tell stories.

Happy Hatching,
Jason Desjardins
Jason@whereideascometohatch.com
Incubation Studios

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whereideascometohatch.blogspot.com/2007/04/marketing-vs-advertising.html' title='Marketing VS. It will be a look inside the workings of a new marketing company with a new perspective on marketing.
